The Volcano is a high flow hotend, for high printing speeds.  It has an extra long melt chamber, which gives the material enough time to reach the required temperature at high flow rates.  Another improvement is that the heater cartridge is mounted parallel to the nozzle, which increases the heat transfer between the heater cartridge and the nozzle.
